This comprehensive monograph "Ding Yi Contemporary Painters Series by Tony Godfrey and Kaimei Wang" explores the artistic evolution of Chinese painter Ding Yi, tracing his career from the late 1980s to the present. Renowned for his exclusive use of the "x" and "+" motifs, Ding Yi has developed a strikingly diverse body of work within the realm of abstraction. His large-scale, meticulously detailed paintings invite a wealth of questions—particularly how an intuitive artist navigates a practice built on recurring symbols and patterns.

Addressing this paradox, the authors examine key themes in Ding Yi’s work, with a central focus on how China—both culturally and environmentally—has influenced his artistic development over the past thirty years. His ability to balance precision with spontaneity has made him a distinctive voice in contemporary art.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Ding Yi has remained committed to non-representational painting, continuously refining his visual language while embracing a variety of materials and techniques. His works are held in major international collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, M+ in Hong Kong, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

As the first monograph to provide a comprehensive overview of Ding Yi’s career, this book offers fresh insights into his creative process, the conceptual foundations of his work, and his lasting impact on contemporary abstraction.
