Mari Lwyd (Grey Mare) is a Welsh midwinter folk tradition involving a horse's skull decorated with ribbons and baubles, mounted on a pole, and carried under a white sheet. Often accompanied by a party, the "steed" visits homes and pubs between Christmas and New Year, engaging in a competitive battle of wits and rhymes, or pwnco, to gain entry for food and drink.
